Amid
1.in the middle of or during something, especially something that causes excitement or fear: ở giữa hoặc trong một cái gì đó, đặc biệt là cái gì đó gây ra sự phấn khích hoặc sợ hãi
Example: He finished his speech amid tremendous applause.
2. Surrounded by something:Được bao quanh bởi một thứ gì đó
Example: The hotel was in a beautiful position amid lemon groves.
Apropos/Apropos of
Regarding, concerning, or related to somebody/something: Liên quan đến, liên quan hoặc liên quan đến ai đó / điều gì đó
Example: Apropos our date for lunch, I cannot go.
Astride
With one leg on each side of something, situated on both sides of something; lying across or over; spanning: Với một chân ở mỗi bên của một cái gì đó, nằm ở cả hai bên của một cái gì đó; nằm ngang hoặc nằm ngang; kéo dài
Example: Rights groups urged the Indonesian government to block a proposed law banning women from sitting astride motorcycles in deeply Islamic Aceh province, where the position is deemed “improper”.
Athwart
- Across, from one side to the other:Ngang qua, từ bên này sang bên kia
Example: They put a table athwart the doorway.
- Not agreeing with, opposite to:Không đồng ý với, ngược lại với
Example: His statement ran athwart what was previously said.
Atop
On top of, at the top of: Ở Trên cùng, ở đầu của cái gì đó
Example: Fruit and vegetable prices rose 1.3 percent atop a 2 percent gain last month.
Barring
Except for, unless there is/are: Ngoại trừ, trừ khi có
Example: Barring accidents, we should arrive on time.
Beneath
1.In or to a lower position than somebody/something; under somebody/something: Ở vị trí thấp hơn ai đó / cái gì đó; dưới ai đó / cái gì đó
Example: They found the body buried beneath a pile of leaves.
2. Not good enough for somebody: Không đủ tốt cho ai đó
Example: He considers such jobs beneath him.
Beside
1.Next to or at the side of somebody/something: Bên cạnh hoặc ở bên cạnh ai đó / cái gì đó
Example: He sat beside her all night.
2. Compared with somebody/something: So sánh với ai đó / cái gì đó
Example: My painting looks childish beside yours.
Beyond
- On or to the further side of something: Ở phía bên kia của một cái gì đó
Example: The road continues beyond the village up into the hills.
- Later than a particular time: Muộn hơn một thời điểm cụ thể
Example: I know what I’ll be doing for the next three weeks but I haven’t thought beyond that.
- More than something: Nhiều hơn một cái gì đó
Example: Our success was far beyond what we thought possible.
- Used to say that something is not possible: Được sử dụng để nói rằng một cái gì đó không thể
Example: The situation is beyond our control.
5. Too far or too advanced for somebody/something: Quá xa hoặc quá cao đối với ai đó / cái gì đó
Example: The exercise was beyond the abilities of most of the class.
Circa
(used with dates) about, in approximately: (được sử dụng với ngày tháng) khoảng, trong khoảng
Example: She was born circa 1920.
Concerning
About something, involving somebody/something: Về cái gì đó, liên quan đến ai đó / cái gì đó
Example: All cases concerning children are dealt with in a special children’s court.
Synonyms: Apropos, Regarding, Respecting, With respect to, As for, As regards, In respect of, With regard to, In regard to.
Considering
Used to show that you are thinking about a particular fact, and are influenced by it, when you make a statement about something:Được sử dụng để thể hiện rằng bạn đang suy nghĩ về một sự kiện cụ thể và bị ảnh hưởng bởi nó, khi bạn tuyên bố về một điều gì đó
Example: Considering he has only just started, he knows quite a lot about it.
Despite/In spite of
Used to show that something happened or is true although something else might have happened to prevent it: Được sử dụng để cho thấy rằng điều gì đó đã xảy ra hoặc là sự thật mặc dù điều gì đó khác có thể đã xảy ra để ngăn chặn điều đó
Example: Despite applying for hundreds of jobs, he is still out of work.
Except/Except for/Apart from/Aside from
Used before mentioning the only thing or person about which a statement is not true: Được sử dụng trước khi đề cập đến sự vật hoặc người duy nhất mà một tuyên bố không đúng sự thật
Example: We work every day except Sunday.
Excluding
Not including: Không bao gồm
Example: Lunch costs 10 dollars per person, excluding drinks.
Failing
Used to introduce a suggestion that could be considered if the one just mentioned is not possible:Được sử dụng để giới thiệu một gợi ý sẽ được xem xét nếu một gợi ý vừa được đề cập là không thể thực hiện được
Example: Ask a friend to recommend a doctor or, failing that, ask for a list in your local library.
Within
- Before a particular period of time has passed; during a particular period of time: Trước khi một khoảng thời gian cụ thể trôi qua; trong một khoảng thời gian cụ thể
Example: Two elections were held within the space of a year.
2. Not further than a particular distance from something: Không xa hơn một khoảng cách cụ thể từ một cái gì đó
Example: a house within a mile of the station
3. Inside the range or limits of something: Bên trong phạm vi hoặc giới hạn của một cái gì đó
Example: The question is not within the scope of this talk.
- Inside somebody/something: Bên trong ai đó / cái gì đó
Example: There is discontent within the farming industry.
