Question: Today, the advanced science and technology have made great changes to people’s life, but artists such as musicians, painters and writers are still highly valued. What can arts tell us about life that science and technology cannot?
It is widely acknowledged that scientific and technological advancements have revolutionized our life, yet those who work in the field of arts such as musicians, painters, and writers have still played an essential role. These people have brought about many values and benefits that we may not reap from science and technology.
To begin with, musicians, painters and writers have their power in enriching individuals’ mental life. Listening to music, enjoying magnificent paintings, or reading meaningful books can stimulate people’s creativeness and help them to escape from stresses. For many people, arts can bring them a sense of relaxation after hours of stressful work and make their life more colorful and meaningful, which science and advanced technologies seem to be impossible to offer. The use of technology has been ascribed to the development of mental health problems. This is particularly the case for internet addiction in which internet addicts have faced depression, low self-esteem, and loneliness.
Another significant merit of arts is that they are doubtlessly beneficial to our society. They can remind us of what happened in the past as well as the development of our society over time. Nations are made up of a collection of stories and legends which have been generally shown through music, paintings, or books. These means have shaped the way we perceive our country and our standing within it. Although science and technology can depict these things on the Internet too, what arts can bring to society in terms of psychological and spiritual values are almost inconvertible by the former.
In conclusion, for the aforementioned arguments, I believe that both individuals and the wider community have gained many emotional benefits from arts that are generally absent from the world of science and technology.
