Question: It is suggested that primary children should learn how to grow vegetables and keep animals. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
It is the case that some elementary schools teach their pupils to plant trees and raise animals. While there are some drawbacks associated with this practice, I am convinced that its benefits are much greater.
On the one hand, there are several disadvantages to early agricultural education. One of the most evident drawbacks is that it might be a burdensome responsibility for the kids when gardening is integrated in the school curriculum. For instance, it can diminish other childhood activities like gambols with their mates. Another major issue that should not be overlooked is financial burdens for the states. This is particularly the case for developing nations as they have to allocate a huge sum of money to schools to ensure the synchronous application of the program.
On the other hand, I think that the lifelong benefits outnumber the risks involved in teaching gardening and agricultural skills. To begin with, being engrossed in horticulture and livestock activities enhances the youngsters’ positive social and interpersonal skills. In other words, they can learn how to cooperate and communicate with their mates, which is of great importance in their social cognition. Another potential benefit could be that those actively engaged in garden projects tend to have a better awareness of protecting the flora and fauna of the globe. Lastly, such vigorous tasks as gardening can be an effective alternative pursuit measure to prevent the kids’ sedentary activities, such as playing video games or overusing the Internet.
In short, while there are some potential demerits of training primary children how to grow vegetables and breed animals, I think that the merits are much more significant. As analyzed previously, agricultural education at the elementary level can contribute to the full physical and mental development of young kids.
