Trong các dạng biểu đồ của IELTS Writing, Map được xem là một trong 2 dạng bài khá khó nhằn vì việc tiếp cận với hình thức miêu tả này chưa quen thuộc như các dạng Bar, Line, Table, Pie. Loại đề bài thường gặp trong IELTS Writing Map

Có 3 dạng bài IELTS Writing task 1 map thường gặp, đó là:

1. Mô tả 1 bản đồ ở thời điểm hiện tại.

Đây là loại bản đồ rất hiếm khi được ra nhất trong 3 dạng IELTS maps. Vì nó chỉ đòi hỏi thí sinh sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn giản và không có sự so sánh nào cả nên không được đánh giá cao.

2. Mô tả 2 bản đồ – 1 ở thời điểm hiện tại và 1 ở thời điểm tương lai.

Dạng map IELTS task 1 này cũng chỉ thỉnh thoảng mới xuất hiện. Dạng bài này sẽ yêu cầu thí sinh sử dụng thì hiện tại và tương lai. Loại IELTS task 1 map này thường mô tả sự phát triển của một thị trấn hoặc một thành phố nào đó trong tương lai.

3. Mô tả 1 bản đồ – trong quá khứ và ở hiện tại.

Đây là loại IELTS writing map phổ biến và hay xuất hiện nhất trong các bài thi IELTS. Thông thường đề bài sẽ cho 2 bản đồ và yêu cầu bạn chọn và miêu tả những đặc điểm nổi bật của bản đồ đó. Sau đó bạn sẽ phải tiến hành so sánh nếu cần thiết. Lưu ý, bạn phải sử dụng cả thì hiện tại và quá khứ để mô tả bản đồ và sự phát triển của địa điểm đó.
Ngoài ra, vì đây là một quá trình nhân tạo nên bạn cần phải sử dụng các mẫu câu bị động.

Cấu trúc bài viết IELTS Writing Map

Để miêu tả 2 bản đồ, người viết nên chia bài viết thành 4 đoạn văn (paragraph):

Đoạn 1: Introduction

Người viết cần paraphrase lại câu ở đề bài bằng các từ đồng nghĩa hoặc thay đổi cấu trúc câu.

Đoạn 2: Overview

Mô tả chung về 2 bản đồ và những sự khác biệt đáng chú ý nhất giữa chúng.
Cấu trúc chung cho câu overview:
Overall, the + [danh từ] + [witness] radical changes with the most noticeable being + [cụm danh từ]
Các cụm danh từ để nêu điểm khác biệt giữa 2 bản đồ thường dùng:

• The relocation and expansion of + ABC: sự di dời và mở rộng của + ABC
• The replacement of ABC for XYZ: sự thay thế của cái cũ (ABC) cho cái mới (XYZ)
• The addition of ABC: sự thêm vào của ABC
• The erection of ABC: sự xây dựng thêm ABC
• The disappearance of ABC: sự biến mất của ABC

Đoạn 3: Main paragraph 1

Miêu tả những thay đổi đã xảy ra.

Đoạn 4: Main paragraph 2

Miêu tả những thay đổi đã xảy ra.
Người viết có thể nhóm thông tin trong đoạn 3 và 4 với nhau theo thời gian hoặc theo các phân khúc trong bản đồ để tiện nhóm thông tin so sánh ( việc này sẽ tùy thuộc vào đề bài).

Cách mô tả những thay đổi cụ thể

Khả năng mô tả sự thay đổi là rất quan trọng trong dạng bài IELTS writing map. Các đối tượng và đặc điểm của chúng thường sẽ được đề bài cho sẵn. Những gì bạn cần làm là làm thế nào để diễn tả sự thay đổi từ quá khứ cho đến hiện tại.
Dưới đây những từ vựng chúng ta có thể sử dụng để diễn tả sự thay đổi của các đối tượng và đặc điểm của chúng:

• Buildings: demolished, knocked-down, flattened, replaced, renovated, built, constructed, reconstructed, developed, extended, expanded, relocated, converted and modernized.

Ví dụ:

The government demolished the industrial estate and developed a sports ground.
They removed the shops and replaced it with a skyscraper.
A port was constructed at the edge of the river.
The factory in the city centre was demolished and relocated to the north of the city.
The old warehouses were replaced with new hotels.
The factory was converted into apartments.

• Trees and Forests: cleared, cut-down, chopped-down, removed, planted.

Ví dụ:

The forest was cut down and replaced with a shopping centre.
The trees were cleared to make way for houses.
Roads, bridges and railways lines- constructed, built, extended, expanded and removed.
The main road was extended and a new bridge built over the river.

• Leisure facilities: opened, set up, developed.

Ví dụ:

A skate park was set up next to the swimming pool.
A park was developed beside the forest.

Cách mô tả những thay đổi chung

Trong đoạn overview bạn cần viết về những thay đổi chung, tổng quát và dễ nhận thấy nhất. Dưới đây là một số gợi ý về câu general statement chúng ta có thể sử dụng để mô tả sự thay đổi:

• Over the period, the area witnessed dramatic changes.
• From 1995 to 2005, the city centre saw spectacular developments.
• The village changed considerably over the time period.
• During the 10-year period, the industrial area was totally transformed.
• Over the past 20 years, the residential area was totally reconstructed.
• Over the time period, the old docks were totally redeveloped.
• Between 1995 and 2005, the old houses were rebuilt.
• The central business district was completely modernised during the time period.

Cách viết Overview đơn giản nhất Chọn 2-3 sự khác biệt đáng chú ý nhất trên bản đồ và viết một câu general statement về mỗi sự khác biệt này. Các câu đó sẽ là Overview cho bài viết của bạn.
Những thay đổi cụ thể hơn sẽ được trình bày trong các phần thân bài phía sau (main paragraph).

Mô tả địa điểm (LOCATION)

Với dạng bài IELTS Writing Map, bạn sẽ phải mô tả vị trí của các đối tượng trên bản đồ và vị trí của các thay đổi đã diễn ra. Một số từ vựng thông dụng, dễ dùng là “to the left” và “to the right”, nhưng để đạt band điểm cao thì bạn nên học cách mô tả bằng “south”, “north”, “west” và “east”.

Ví dụ:

• The forest to the south of the river was cut down.
• A golf course was constructed to the north of the airport.
• The houses in the south-west of the town were demolished.
• The green fields to the north-west of the city were redeveloped as a park.
• The airport in the centre of the city was relocated to the north-east of the river.
• The school to the south-east was knocked down and a new one built to the east of the forest.

Bên cạnh đó, bạn nên sử dụng các giới từ chỉ địa điểm, ví dụ: at/in/on/by/beside/to/off/from, để mô tả vị trí các vật trên bản đồ.

Ví dụ:

• Dramatic changes took place in the city centre.
• To the south of the town, there is a golf course surrounded by trees.
• A new school was built next to the swimming pool.
• The old road running from north to south was replaced by a new motorway.
• A marina was built on the banks of the river.

The given maps illustrate the transformation of a conference hall in 2010 compared to 2009.
Overall, the trade conference witnessed radical changes with the most noticeable being the replacement of a concert hall and a meeting room for an exhibition area.
In 2009, there were a main entrance and a side entrance in the northwest and northeast corner of the floor, between which was a registration area. After one year, while the two entrances remained unchanged, the registration area was relocated to the south to make way for a newly-built refreshment area.
On the bottom right-hand corner of the conference hall, the balcony was equipped with a lounge area in 2010, whereas the nearby exhibition area was expanded and moved to the left hand side. Additionally, the concert hall was repositioned next to the balcony with a stage a number of seats inside, while the meeting room and the display area was demolished.

Question 1: The diagram below shows the changes that have taken place at West Park Secondary School since its construction in 1950. 

ANSWER:

The maps show the developments that occurred at West Park Secondary School during a 60-year period from 1950 to 2010.

It is clear from the maps that the biggest change that happened at the school was the construction of a car park. Additionally, houses and farmland had completely disappeared by 2010.

In 1950, the school was quite small and it was located to the south of the main road. There were residential houses in the northwest corner, but those houses were demolished in 1980 to make way for a car park and a science block. Farmland was also destroyed and replaced by a sports field, while the playground in the southeast area still existed.

From 1980 to 2010, the car park was dramatically extended, and the sports field was moved a little to the east, forcing the playground to become smaller. Meanwhile, the science block and the main building of the school still remained close to the main road.

Question 2:

The maps show changes that took place in Youngsville in New Zealand over a 25 year period from 1980 to 2005.

ANSWER:

The maps illustrate the developments which took place in the coastal town of Youngsville between 1980 and 2005.

Overall, a comparison of the two maps reveals a complete transformation from a largely rural to a mainly urban area.

In the year 1980, the town was a much greener residential area with a large number of trees and individual houses, but during the next 25 years, the town saw a number of significant changes. The most noticeable is that all of the trees in the south of the River Alanah were chopped down, with all the houses along the railway line being demolished to make way for skyscrapers. Moreover, a new industrial zone with warehouses and factories sprang up around the school and airport.

In contrast, only a few trees in the north of the river remained. The woodland was cleared and converted into a golf course, a park, and car parting facilities. Further developments were the construction of a stadium next to the north- east corner of the lake and the extension of the railway line from the river running directly to the north. A Marina was also constructed at the mouth of the river.
