It is true that nowadays, the majority of young people often choose to spend their leisure time going shopping. There are some reasons for this tendency and I think that we should promote many active social activities for their well-being.

b. Body

There are some reasons why people enjoying shopping. One of the first reasons leading to this trend is associated with adverts. Nowadays, advertisements play a key role in promoting any business, and they also create superficial trends which urge people to spend their money more than necessary. Those adverts appear everywhere, from streets, shops, to televisions and especially the Internet which is an indispensable part of young people’s life. Once psychologically affected by those ads, young people go shopping more often. Another reason is that youngsters do not want to be left behind their times and their peers. If they do not know what the latest fashion trend is or what their state-of-the-art smartphone the world is using, they may feel outdated. Gradually, they develop an internal motivation to go shopping even when they do not actually have a demand for these items.

Although shopping may be favored by some, I would argue that youngsters should participate in other useful activities, either physically or mentally. From a physical perspective, it is important that they spend a sufficient amount of time doing some form of sports or exercise. Therefore, instead of going to shops and purchase unnecessary items, they should go to swimming pool, tennis court or other sports centers to practice. For their mental health, reading books has been proved to help increase its reader’s empathy and can make them more mentally flexible. Thus, reading is also an attractive option when young people decide how to spend their free time.

Ở Body 1, người viết diễn giải ý quảng cáo không muốn bị tụt hậu tại ra thói quen mua sắm:

  • appear everywhere
  • go shopping more often

Ở Body 2, người viết giới thiệu những hoạt động hữu ích khác mà họ nên làm:

  • sports or exercise
  • reading

Vậy ta có một bài hoàn chỉnh như sau:

a. Introduction

It is the globally case that new technologies have had an influence on communication between people. There are some effects related to technology, and it brings both positives and negatives.

Người viết trả lời 2 câu hỏi đề bài dựa trên ý kiến khách quan, không dùng những cụm như: I think, From my perspective,…

b. Body

Technology has had an impact on relationships in business, education and social life . Firstly, telephones and the Internet allow business people in different countries to interact without ever meeting each other. Secondly, services like Skype create new possibilities for relationships between students and teachers. For example, a student can now take video lessons with a teacher in a different city or country. Finally, many people use social networks, like Facebook, to make new friends and find people who share common interests, and they interact through their computers rather than face to face.

These technological developments can be both positive and negative. Cooperation between people in different countries was much more difficult when communication was limited to written letters or telegrams. Nowadays, interactions by email, phone or video are almost as good as face-to-face meetings, and many ofus benefit from these interactions, either in work or social contexts. On the other hand, the availability of new communication technologies can also have the result of isolating people and discouraging real interaction. For example, many young people choose to make friends online rather than mixing with their peers in the realworld, and these ‘virtual’ relationships are a poor substitute for real friendships.

c. Conclusion

In conclusion, while parents may have justifiable reasons for pressurizing their children to become successful, this approach may harm those children in a number of ways, and thus, should not be adopted.

PRACTICE

Exercise – Construct a complete Two-part questions essay based on the hints provided below.

One way to solve the problem of congestion on the roads is to increase the tax on private vehicles.

How could this alleviate congestion?

What other measures can you suggest to deal with congestion in cities?

Body 1

How could this alleviate congestion

  • Hint 1 pay more money on private vehicles switch to public transport
  • Hint 2 tax can be used to build more roads, improve infrastructure less traffic jam.

Body 2

Other measures to deal with congestion

  • Hint 1 companies introduce flexi-hour avoid leaving work in rush hours.
  • Hint 2 apply remote working (work at home some days/week) easing the streets.

Sample Answer

It is suggested by some people that one way to tackle the problem of traffic jam is to impose higher tax on private transport. This method can help reduce traffic congestion to some extent but may be less effective than some other solutions discussed below.

It is understandable that raising tax on individual private transport can help deal with street congestion. If people had to pay more money for their cars or motorbikes, it is obvious that they would switch to public transport in order to lighten financial burden. When there are fewer individual vehicles in traffic, congestion may happen less frequently and severely. Apart from this, the tax amount can be used by the authority to improve infrastructure such as constructing wider roads and lanes, improving pavements and parking facilities. Once the roads are big enough for traffic participants, they can prevent themselves from getting stuck in peak hours and drive more safely.

There are some other solutions that may be more effective in curbing traffic jam than taxing policy. A very promising option is that companies should introduce flexi-hour scheme in which employees are allowed to come to work at the time of their choice, as long as they work eight hours a day. By doing this, workers can avoid leaving for work in rush hours, resulting in a moderate number of vehicles on streets all day round. Another possible solution is to apply remote working for employees, which means that they can work at home some days a week. This not only gives workers more freedom and convenience but also actively contributes to easing the streets.

In conclusion, although taxing private vehicles may help with street congestion at some certain points, this approach may not work as well as others like changing working hours or applying remote working schemes.

Homework

Many crimes are related to the consumption of alcohol. Some people think that the best way to reduce the crime rate is to ban alcohol.

Do you think this is an effective measure against crime?

What other solutions can you suggest?

Sample Answer

It is believed by some people that prohibiting alcohol is the most effective way to reduce the rising number of alcohol-related offences. In my opinion, although this measure is a promising option, it, to some extent, inhibits human freedom, and thus may not be welcomed as warmly as some other solutions discussed below.

Banning alcohol is considered as a quick way to combat crimes associated with intoxication, which often makes people unaware of their behaviors. When they do not have any beer or wine, they have to switch to other non-alcoholic drinks like soda, coke or energy drinks which help them stay sober. As a result, they take full control over themselves and avoid dangerous actions which harm others such as careless driving or fighting. That said, prohibiting alcohol seems to violate people’ freedom in choosing what to drink and how to relax. As long as people do not cause harm to others, they should be given the right to decide what to drink.

Given that drinking is a way to entertain and socialize with friends, some other measures should be implemented to remedy the negative impacts of alcohol rather than banning it. One way to do so is to limit the amount of alcohol which someone is allowed to drink at public places. All restaurants in New Zealand must refuse to serve alcohol to guests who seem intoxicated, for instance. Another possible measure to deter driving offences is to request drunk guests to take public transport home. For example, in front of a bar in Ireland, there is a long white stripe on the ground and any tipsy customers leaving the bar is asked to walk over the stripe. If they fail to do so, they are not allowed to drive home on their own.

In conclusion, it is clear that banning alcohol can help reduce alcohol-related crimes but it may not be welcomed as enthusiastically as other aforementioned solutions which do not violate human freedom.
